LEP Qualifications

Assessment of Limited English Proficiency Students

A student is assessed at the time of enrollment through the home language survey, or upon referral by a counselor,  a teacher, or an administrator for the screening process to  determine if a student will qualify for LEP services. With parental approval, the WIDA Assessment will be administered to each student before admission into the LEP program.  This test is a standardized tool that will qualify the student as LEP and determines the level of the student’s English proficiency. This test will be given within the first thirty days of enrollment or within twenty days for a mid-term enrollment.

The Access English Proficiency Exam will be given in February of each year to monitor the yearly progress of the students.  The Access Exam will be used to determine dismissal of the student from the LEP program as well as approval from the LEP teacher.

The Dakota STEP,  a standardized test given to students in grades 3-8  and 11 , will also be administered to the LEP student enrolled in those grades using accommodations if necessary.
